Hangzhou Christian Si-Cheng Church Introduction

Si-Cheng Church is the only existing old church in Hangzhou city, located at 132 Jie-Fang Road in the Shangcheng district. It has a history of nearly a century. The church is affiliated with the American Northern Presbyterian Mission. It was initially established by American missionary couple Mr. and Mrs. John Livingston Nevius in 1859 when they came to Hangzhou to spread the gospel. In 1864, American and Chinese missionaries established a preaching station in a rented house on Pi-Shi Lane. In 1872, they purchased a larger hall near Feng-Le Bridge, which was used as a place of worship. As the number of believers grew, a new church building was constructed on the original site in 1924 and completed in 1927, with a total cost of 60,000 silver yuan. In memory of Pastor Zhang Cheng-Zhai, the church was named "Si-Cheng Church." The inaugural senior pastor was Rev. Fan Guang-Rong.

During the Cultural Revolution, Si-Cheng Church was repurposed as a warehouse for the Hangzhou Library. However, in 1981, with the implementation of new religious policies, the church was returned to its religious use, and a rededication ceremony was held on August 30th of the same year. Since then, Rev. Cai Wen-Hao, Rev. Sun Xi-Pei, Rev. Zhang Yao-Fa, and Rev. Huang Ming-Ke have served as senior pastors.

The church building features a Chinese-style architecture with upturned eaves and solidly stacked blue brick walls on the exterior. The interior uses imported pine wood for beams and columns, following a symmetrical layout. The church has a baptismal pool beneath the platform on the first floor, a main worship hall on the second floor, and a cloister-style third floor. The windows are designed with traditional Chinese garden features, showcasing a typical Chinese architectural style.

At present, Si-Cheng Church has approximately 3000 regular attendees. In addition to Sunday worship services and youth gatherings, the church also hosts weekday Bible studies, prayer meetings, inquirers' classes, five choirs, and three bands for rehearsals, as well as over fifty fellowship and service groups. The church observes Holy Communion on the first Sunday of each month and conducts baptisms twice a year. It is actively involved in various ministries, including conducting weddings, funeral services, preaching, and visiting the sick.

The church's administrative team consists of four pastors, five elders, one minister, three administrative staff, and twenty-eight committee members, each playing a specific role and committed to the church's objectives of "trusting in God, looking up to Christ, relying on the Holy Spirit, dedicating to the church, serving in teams, being united in heart and mind, and promoting the gospel."

Hangzhou is a renowned tourist city both domestically and internationally, attracting a multitude of visitors. Si-Cheng Church is a significant religious venue among churches in Zhejiang. Its unique architectural style, cultural atmosphere, and religious significance contribute to Hangzhou's Christian history and the localization of Christianity in China. Additionally, the church plays a crucial role in promoting harmonious religious relationships and advocating religious freedom in the country.
